TRIUMPH ROADSTER

Contemporary images

As a sought after car from its inception, images of the car during the forties and fifties abound. The cars appeared in many films, and books such as 'The Wonder book of Motors' with pictures of the car sowed the seeds of desire in schoolboys like myself to own one when funds allowed.

Above: 'The Wonder book of Motors' photograph in its period sepia tones.

Above: Collector's card sets such as this 1949 Geoffrey Michael 'Modern Motor Cars' featured the Roadster.

Above: Cutting from the Daily Express, Tuesday June 3rd 1947, showing the infamous 'Toadster' publicity shot where the front mudguards look like the air sacs of a mating toad. The copy was complimentary though, stating 'On the Chertsey by-pass we shot up to 30 miles per hour in second, and more than 50 in third gear. Somewhere near the 80 mark I had to throttle back for roundabouts. But I should think it will reach the makers' claim of 84 m.p.h., for it is not a heavy car (22cwt.) in relation to its power. One of the most notable features are the toe-sensitive Girling brakes. At any speed the car brakes quickly, gently and with great good humour. Cruising home at night at 40 miles an hour I checked the Triumph doing 26 miles to the gallon, and the four cylinder overhead valve engine was noiseless as the breeze in the trees (Editor's note: This was the 1800 powered car). At my garage the attendant asked about the performance. "From 0 to 50 in 15 seconds." I said. "With lines like that and speed as well she ought to be a winner." he said. I think he was right. Price: £991 0s. 7d., including purchase tax.
